Martinez se impone en Tahití

El rookie californiano Bobby Martinez, un neófito desconocido en el tour hasta el pasado sábado, se ha impuesto en la tercera prueba de la temporada, disputada en la célebre Teahupoo, en una final de infarto ante el hawaiano Fred Patacchia, al que derrotó por tan solo 20 centésimas de punto. En una edición caracterizada por un continuo, pero no elevado swell, Martinez se encargó de conseguir los tubos más prolongados y las maniobras más radicales, si bien la ola no consiguió dar el juego que el año pasado, cuando los surfistas entubaron en barreras de 5 y 6 metros de tamaño. El vigente número uno, y actual campeón del circuito, Kelly Staler, quedó desbancado en las semifinales, después de sufrir una caída desde lo alto de la ola, y cortarse en el abdomen con el afilado arrecife coralino. Teahuppo es extremadamente peligroso en este sentido, y en años anteriores, las bajas han sido las constantes en la competición. Con esta victoria, Martinez se sitúa segundo en el ránking provisional, y Slater se asienta en una cómoda primera posición, ya alejado en más de mil puntos del aspirante Andy Irons y el aussie Taj Burrow. Próxima parada: Fiji. Más tubos y riesgo en el reef de Cloudbreak, donde Slater, cómo no, venció el año pasado. ¿Quién le hará sombra en 2006...?
